Where is design headed in the future? These questions are increasingly being asked by consumers and designers as the realities of living in a consumer society, where older goods are thrown out as soon as newer ones can be bought has taken a toll on the environment. Utterubbish is 'a witty review of recycling, redemption and recourse through design.
To remedy and re examine this impact, with the aim of creating a future that is sustainable and eco-logically friendly is the impetus for Territory's collaboration with Utterubbish Pte Ltd at this November's Singapore Design Festival. The concept behind the show, is to explore alternative methods of design, taking in account the use of a minimalist approach (Less is More), the catch phrase is "useless = use less" and recycled material in the creating and fashioning of the product. The 'Useless' exhibition will be the feature event in this year's design festival.
Utterubbish has invited some of the biggest names internationally and locally to come together. Their task is to think up a design monographic with the words "Use Less" incorporated and applied on recycled materials. The materials include recycled paper, Tyvek as well as canvas. Their offerings will be seen on Jackets, bags and posters, and will be available in limited numbers for purchase at the exhibition. All recycled products are sponsored by Basheer Graphic Books, and will also be available during the period of the Design Festival, at the Utterubbish shop run by Basheer.
Designers that have been invited by Territory to participate in this show are a varied and eclectic mix. Klaus Haapaneimi, is world renowned for his Russian and Scandinavian folk art style of illustration.
