Artecnica - Design With Conscience
Artecnica's award-winning Design with Conscience
collection reintroduces traditional craft into the high design landscape.
Each unique piece in the collection is a collaborative effort art directed
by Artecnica, conceptualized by renowned international designers, and handcrafted
by artisan communities across the globe.
Artecnica acts as a bridge worldwide to connect celebrated designers with
skilled artisans, redirecting the production locus from the factory floor
to the artisan's workshop. Each piece has a cross-cultural creation story
heavily reliant on artisan skills, and offers an organic and spontaneous alternative
to factory-produced design. From product to packaging, Design with Conscience
projects begin with a strong design vision and are rendered concrete via an
iterative discourse.
Each handmade Design with Conscience piece is a portrait of its own individual
design story. Artecnica strives to incorporate ethnic motifs, materials, and
techniques into each product, making the craftsman's skills essential to the
success of the design. Featuring Hella Jongerious' Beads & Pieces, Tord Boontje's
Come Rain Come Shine, Tord Boontje and Emma Woffenden's tranSglass, Humberto
and Fernando Campana's TransNeomatic, and Stephen Burks' TaTu, the collection
is an exercise in sustainable design, utilizing environmentally-friendly materials,
and providing artisan communities with an alternative economic reality.
In establishing Design with Conscience, Artecnica strives to widen the focus
of design beyond the product to encompass the whole design process from concept
to finished product. Through the use of eco-friendly materials and production
methods as well as the promotion of handcrafted work, Design with Conscience
also calls attention to our own wasteful consumer habits, encouraged by the
surfeit of readily available mass produced items. Thus, Design with Conscience
not only delivers unique and stimulating products but also acknowledges the
value of human skill and sustainability.

COLORS
Established in 1991, from an idea of Luciano
Benetton and Oliviero Toscani, under the direction of Tibor Kalman, with the
premise that diversity is positive but that all cultures have equal value,
today COLORS is part of the publishing activity in Fabrica, Benetton's communication
research centre.
Pictures are, above all else, COLORS' expressive medium. Using this visual
language, COLORS' themes alternate between the challengingly serious, such
as ecology, wars around the world, the fight against aids, and the frankly
frivolous. Each is seen from an unconventional, irreverent perspective.
COLORS is a quarterly magazine that talks to young adults all around the
world. It is on sale in 40 countries and 4 bilingual editions: English plus
French, Spanish, Italian and, starting from November 2007, Chinese.

Design&Disasters
Design&Disasters is a project initiated by the DesignSingapore
Council, with the aim of creating design that can be deployed to prepare for
and minimise effects of disasters, in the case of disaster occurrences in
the 5Rs: 1. Resilience 2. Respond 3. Rescue 4. Restore 5. Rebuild. It also
hopes to cultivate a better appreciation of design's role in improving lives
and in humanitarian aid, as well as an understanding that design is not the
exclusive precinct of the elite, but also has a broad-based functional humanitarian
utility.

Toy Saves Children
Toy saves Children is a charity project that presents
“artworks” done by leading international artists under a clear concept. Artists
from all over the world are invited to customize a toy. These toys are exhibited
around the world and auctioned off during the exhibition with proceeds going
to the children's charity groups. The project hopes to spread the "charm of
toy" and "interest to the charity action" to as many people as possible through
the exhibitions and auctions of these customized toys. Through the project,
Toy saves children seeks to promote and explore "what artists can do for children"
and to make “the future a better place for as many children as possible.”

thomas.matthews

creative communication design studio in London. Ten years on and with over
400 completed design projects in the portfolio that range from small print
pieces to international exhibitions, thomas.matthews are now recognised as
one of the leading sustainable design studios in the UK.
At thomas.matthews designers have a shared passion for clever design and humorous
solutions. There is also a desire to help save the planet and the studio has
always had roots firmly planted in practical sustainable thinking. This year
saw the self publication of their book ‘ten ways design can combat climate
change’ A summary so far of the studio’s thoughts and experiences on how to
use design to communicate better ways of living.
For all designers it is challenging to think about the physical impact of
their work on the next 1000 years and frightening when they realise that theirs
is the power to educate and shape that future. Today’s situation calls for
new solutions and radical thinking, critical response and ‘crazy, but there
might just be something in it’ conversations. thomas.matthews is looking for
people who want to join in with these discussions. It’s time to shake things
up and re-invent.

Argentum
Shing, the creator behind Argentum, is a jeweller who
ardently believes in the merit of working with one's hands. The St Martins-trained
artisan challenges the boundaries of jewellery through her constant questioning
of the very medium she works in. Her staple metal is silver though she also
revels in rather unorthodox materials like rubber, bone, broken glass and
trash bags. She sees her pieces as emotive extensions of one’s self. The signature
hook and suicide tag that hang from her creations reflect an inner struggle
within human existence. Her jewellery transcends adornment, the realm between
the material and spiritual seems to fade in her ethereal collections. Argentum
is carried internationally in stores like Blackjack (Singapore), Agosto Inc.
(Tokyo), HPFrance (Tokyo) and Ulf Haines (Berlin).

Serendipity Studio - GOMI
The concept behind GOMI is based on the theme, "Recycle,
Reuse and Reinvent". "GOMI", meaning "rubbish" in Japanese, is a project based
on the notion of recycling as a way of propagating new creation. Emphasizing
on the usage of recycled materials in the process of creation, it is the intent
of the initiators to create an awareness of environmental issues for both
the public and designers alike.
Harnessing on interactive web technologies, GOMIweb.org serves as the platform
for exchanges between designers and users to take place. Whilst digital graphics
are collected from designers on one end, users may select and remix the graphics
to create their own design on the other end. Users then have a choice of printing
their new design onto old T-shirts with a hands-on session on silkscreen printing.
A socio-economical project conceptualized by Joyce Chin of The Serendipity
Studio (Singapore) and Tetsuya Goto of WINKER (Japan), GOMI challenges its
participants to find their own "goldmine" in the heaps of "gomi".
Joyce Chin started The Serendipity Studio upon her return from the UK in 2004.
Working as a designer-artist and a design educator since, her design process
has been evolving through the experimentations and collaborations with other
artists and designers. Joyce believes that a good design is the outcome of
a unique design process where craftmanship plays an important role. She is
currently experimenting with the integration of traditional craft-making techniques
into design processes.
WINKER is a creative collective/label based in Osaka, Japan. Founded in 2003
by Tetsuya Goto, it is a label that collaborates with creators 'with a difference' from
all over the world. Duncan Brotherton has joined Tetsuya and WINKER has expanded
its activities as a creative collective. WINKER's latest project is an alternative
working space project named 'OOO' (Out Of Office), where creators work alongside
one another in a space aimed at creating a stimulating environment. WINKER's
activities are aimed to be 'edifying' for creators. In Japanese, a 'winker'
is a car indmicator. In a siilar way, WINKER wants to be a creative indicator
for creators.

The blue-print of Woods & Woods is a result of functional clothes that reflect

the built environment. WOHA’s philosophy is to explore the potential of culture,
context, history, nature, climate, sustainability and social behaviour to
evolve innovative design. Formed in 1994 by Singaporean Wong Mun Summ and
Australian Richard Hassell, the practice is based on the model of the creative
industries, rather than traditional construction services. With a mix of designers
from diverse backgrounds, WOHA explores integrated design for the built environment,
encompassing masterplanning, architectural, landscape, interior and lighting
and furniture design. WOHA has received numerous international awards for
excellence in design, and has been featured in international professional

focus on innovation and diversity of interests has developed experience in
a wide mix of building types and scales, including commercial, residential,
hospitality, transport, infrastructure, institutional, religious, mixed-use
